i
Closure Report 9
Golden Grain Manteca Bean Facility,299 Moffat Boulevard,Manteca,California July 16,1996
The results of the soil vapor extraction pilot test evaluation were used to determine the expected
' radius of Influence from vapor extraction wells and flow rates for the applied vacuum levels used in
the test In addition, the contaminant concentrations were recorded for the test wells, at different
vacuum and flow rates The radius of Influence for applied vacuum determined by the pilot test was
' from 80 feet to 90 feet from the extraction points, at the maximum tested flow rate of 130 cubic feet
per minute (cfm) As expected, the radius of Influence decreased as the tested flow rate was
reduced This Information was used to evaluate which wells would be selected as primary system
vapor extraction wells Furthermore, the pilot test data was used to determine the proper equipment
required to remediate the impacted zone and treat the hydrocarbon concentrations estimated to be in
' the system off-gas flow
Data from the groundwater extraction pumping test were used to determine recovery well efficiency,
aquifer properties, radius of influence, and recovery well capture zone In addition, contaminant
concentrations were recorded for the effluent stream at the end of the test These data were
' subsequently used to determine the final design requirements for the groundwater extraction and
treatment system as well as the estimated vapor discharge from the groundwater treatment
equipment
32 Treatment System Description
' The results of the feasibility studies and pilot tests documented in the PAR, Remedial Action Plan
(RAP), and addendum to the RAP were analyzed and the final treatment technologies for the site
were selected The technology selected for remediation of the hydrocarbon impacted groundwater
was extraction utilizing a submersible pump with treatment by a low profile tray air stripper(i a pump
and treat) The treated groundwater is discharged to the City of Manteca publicly owned treatment
works (POTW) and the vent gas from the air stripper is routed to the soil vapor treatment equipment
The selected technology to treat the hydrocarbon impacted soil was vapor extraction Two
monitoring wells (MW-2 and MW-3)were converted to vapor extraction wells and a 1 5 horsepower
regenerative blower was utilized to extract vapors from the vadose zone The hydrocarbon vapors
from the soil vapor extraction system and the vent gas from the air stripper were treated with a 250
standard cubic feet per minute catalytic oxidizer Additionally a lead scrubber was placed between
the vacuum blower and the catalytic oxidizer to remove any lead contained in the extracted vapors
Silica gel was used in the lead scrubber to absorb lead within the vapor stream The layout of the
' 42020211CR
FLUOR DANIEL GTI
