i
Closure Report 10
Golden Grain Manteca Bean Facility,299 Moffat Boulevard,Manteca,California July 16, 1996
I
original treatment facility and a system piping schematic are included as figures 15 and 16,
respectively
' 3 2.1 Treatment System Operation
The groundwater and sod remediation system was Installed in August and September 1992 Prior to
work at the site, all necessary permits with the City of Manteca, the County Air Board, and the
' County Health Department were procured Construction began August 11, 1992 All underground
and aboveground construction was performed and completed by September 4, 1992 The final
building permit was issued on September 10, 1992, and the official start-up date for the remediation
system was September 14, 1992 The groundwater extraction flow rate was 5 gallons per minute
' (gpm) as dictated by the POTW discharge permit, and the approximate vapor extraction flow rate
vaned between 40 and 120 cfm
' During the operational period of the remediation system the site equipment was inspected,
maintained, and operational parameters were collected on a weekly basis System inspections
included weekly readings to check the influent and effluent vapor streams for the soil vapor
treatment equipment In addition, system groundwater and soil vapor treatment equipment influent
and effluent samples were collected and analyzed by a laboratory on a quarterly basis The site
' monitoring wells were sampled on a quarterly schedule with the system sampling and the results
were submitted in reports quarterly to the SJCPHS and the RWQCB This schedule has continued
' during the entire duration of the project, through the current quarter
The groundwater and soil extraction and treatment systems operated in the configuration described
' above until October 1994, when two additional monitoring wells were plumbed into the vapor
extraction system and the lead scrubber was turned off Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-4 were
' plumbed into the system as vapor extraction wells because of elevated ambient hydrocarbon
readings collected from these wells during quarterly vapor monitoring This was done in order to
increase the mass removal rate for the site remediation The lead scrubber was removed from the
' process flow because lead was consistently not detected in the quarterly samples collected from the
extracted soil vapor stream The operation of the treatment system was not significantly altered, but
the flow rate of extracted soil vent gas was increased
In June 1995, after the Influent groundwater and vapor concentrations had diminished to
' concentrations approaching asymptotic levels (see appendix D), further modifications to the system
configuration and operation were planned in July 1995,the groundwater treatment system was
' 4202=3.CR
I
FLUOR DANIEL GTI
