r
1
• 2.2 Sod and Groundwater-Grab Sampling and Analysis
r
On July 12, 1999 and August 19, 1999, soil and groundwater-grab samples were collected from
five locations using a Geoprobe® Direct-Push Technology rig (Geoprobe), to evaluate the
concentration and extent of any impacted soil and/or groundwater associated with the former
USTs The Geoprobe rig was operated by Fisch Environmental (C-57 License#683865) On
July 12, 1999, one soil boring was drilled through the northern end of the former UST
excavation This boring was continuously cored with the Geoprobe MacroCore system On
August 19, 1999 four sod borings were positioned approximately 20 to 40 fleet from the former
USTs and drilled with the Geoprobe large-bore discrete sampling system One of the soil
borings was located on the 99 Recycling Center property, immediately east of the subject site
The locations of the five soil borings are shown on Figure 2
r From the continuously cored sod boring (SB-1), sod samples were collected for possible
laboratory analysis at depths corresponding to obvious changes in lithology or hydrogeology
The continuously cored soil boring was extended to a total depth of 43 feet bgs From each of
' the four other Geoprobe soil borings, discrete, undisturbed soil samples were collected at five
foot intervals between 10 to 35 feet bgs Two of the sod borings (SB-2 and SB-4) were extended
to 43 feet bgs for deeper sod sampling A field geologist logged all sod samples for
hydrogeologic and lithologic characteristics according to the Unified Sod Classification System
and screened each sample for hydrocarbon vapors using a flame ionization detector
r
From each sod boring, a groundwater-grab sample was collected through dedicated and
disposable polyethylene tubing and a check valve Using an oscillating motion, groundwater
was pumped to the surface and into laboratory-supplied glassware Fallowing the groundwater-
grab sampling, each of the soil borings was abandoned using a neat cement grout Each
borehole was filled with grout from the bottom using a tremae pipe
Six soil samples from SB-1, five soil samples from SB-2, SB-3, SB-4 and SB-5, and all of the
groundwater-grab samples were labeled and stored in an iced cooler for transport with chain-of-
custody documentation to Kiff Analytical, LLC (Kiff), a state of California certified hazardous
waste testing laboratory (Certification #2236) Kiff analyzed all of the soil and groundwater-grab
samples for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH)-as-diesel by modified EPA Method 8015, for
TPH-as-gasoline, BTEX, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), di-isopropyl ether(DIPS), ethyl
tertiary butyl ether(ETBE), tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME) and tertiary butanol (TBA) by EPA
Method 82608 The sod sample collected at 15 feet bgs from SB-1 was also analyzed for total
' lead by EPA Method 6010 All laboratory analyses were performed on a standard tum-around
1 8
r
