10 August 1999
• AGE-NC Project No. 98-0520
Page 2 of d
Geologist in accordance with the (Preliminary Site Assessment Work Plan) 30 November 1998,
prepared by AGE.
3.L ADVANCEMENT OF SOIL PROBE BORINGS
Soil probe borings were advanced using AGE's van-mounted Geoprobe 5400 direct-push probing
unit equipped with 1.25-inch probing rods. The Geoprobe advances soil probe borings using a
hydraulic or pneumatic hammer to drive soil and ground water sampling.tools to specified depths.
On 05 February 1999,AGE advanced four soil probe borings at the site. Probe borings B-1 and B-2
were advanced within the former UST No.2 and No. 1 excavations to depths of 40.25 and 25.25 feet
bsg,respectively. Probe boring B-3 was advanced within the former waste oil UST No. 3 excavation
to 20.25 feet bgs. The fourth boring, B-4 was advanced northwest of the former dispenser islands
to 20.25 feet bgs. Samples were collected at five-foot intervals in each probe boring.
3.2. SOIL AND GRAB GROUNDWATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
Discrete soil samples were collected using the Geoprobe push-driven 2-inch sampler fitted with four
six-inch long brass sleeves at a 5-foot interval, beginning at 5 feet bsg from all soil borings. Soil
samples were preserved by covering both ends of the second brass sleeve with Teflon sheets,capping
.and sealing with tape. Each preserved sample sleeve was labeled with soil boring location, depth,
time, date and sampler's initials and was stored in a chilled container under ice. Soil encountered
in the borings were visually classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS). Additionally, soil samples were field screened for the presence of
volatile organic compounds using an organic vapor meter(OVM). Selected soil samples were logged
on a chain-of-custody, transported to a State of California Department of Health Services (DHS)-
certified laboratory and analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Method 5030/8015M;
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as motor oil (TPH-mo) in accordance with EPA
Method 3550/8015M;
• Volatile aromatics(benzene,toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene: BTEX)with methyl tertiary-
butyl ether(MTBE) in accordance with EPA Method 8020;
• Volatile hydrocarbons in accordance with EPA Method 601; and
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
