30 November 1998
AGE-NC Project No: 98-0520
3.0. FIELD PROCEDURES
All field procedures will be overseen by an AGE representative under the supervision of a California
' Registered Geologist. Procedures for the advancement of probe borings, soil sampling, ground water
sampling, equipment decontamination and sample shipment are outlined below.
3.1. PROBE BORING ADVANCEMENT
' Probe borings.will be advanced using AGE's van-mounted Geoprobe 5400 direct-push probing unit
equipped with 1.25-inch probing rods. The Geopzobe advances soil probe borings using a hydraulic
or pneumatic hammer to drive soil and ground water sampling tools,to specified depths.
t
3.2. SOIL SAMPLING.PROCEDURES
Soil' samples will be collected using Geoprobe push-driven 2-inch diameter discrete and/or
continuous core samplers fitted with four six-inch long brass sleeves or a four-foot long Teflon
sleeve, respectively.Upon removal from the sampler, the sample sleeve is separated with a clean soil
knife. The exposed ends of the sleeve will be covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with
' tape. Soils encountered in the borings will be visually classified by an AGE geologist in accordance
with the Unified soil Classification System (USCS). Additionally, soil samples with b'e field
screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds•using an OVM.
' . Following sample collection each preserved sample sleeve w1
11 be labeled with the boring location,
depth, time, date and sampler's initials. Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in
' a chilled container under ice and transported under chain-of-custody procedure to a DTSC-certified
laboratory.
3.3. IN-SITU GROUND WATER SAMPLING PROCEDURES
' ;For the collection of"grab" ground water samples, soil probe borings will be advanced to the top
of the ground water table as identified by collection of a saturated soil sample. Once ground water
' has-been encountered, a Geoprobe push-driven water sampling device will be advanced two to three
feet into the water bearing zone. Grab ground water samples will be collected using a Geoprobe
water sampling assembly fitted with a pre-cleaned one-inch 0.01 slotted temporary well screen. Each
' ground water sample will be extracted by lowering a Teflon bailer through the hollow center of the
push rods into the screen section. Samples Tor BTEX, TPH-g, VOCs;HVOCs and fuel oxygenate
analyses will be collected in laboratory-supplied;40-ml VOA vials containing 0.5-m1 of hydrochloric
Advanced GeoEnvironmeMal,Inc.
