1 of water from the drainage ditch along Mountain House Road. During the course df
• 2 the construction of these berms, I have specified that the corrals will be graded in such
3 a way as to cause drainage to flow into the on-site collection system and, ultimately,
4 into the retention,ponds.
5 7. I have also specified that a gate or valve be constructed on the north si e
6 of the pastures so that if the perimeter berm system is compromised, water collected
7 in the pasture can be released if the retention ponds are threatened with inundation.
8 8. The winter storage area for manure is 250,000 cubic feet. This area a
9 as a pre-settlement pond which allows liquids to separate from solids. The liquids AIre
10 collected through a culvert system and deposited in the existing pond. Thus, there) is
11 a mechanism to prevent effluent from this winter manure storage area from coming,in
12 contact with rain water from the pasture.
13 9. The capacity of the new retention pond system is more than adequate)to
14 handle all waste generated by the Dairy during the rainy season. Consequently, i is
15 my opinion it is unnecessary to construct roofs over the corrals. From a manure
16 management standpoint, the purpose of constructing corral roofs is to prevent
17 rainwater from coming in contact with manured areas and then to capture rain from
18 the roofs in a gutter and drainage system directed into a pasture area. By doing this,
19 the capacity of the ponds can be reduced. In this case, if roofs are constructed over the
20 corral areas at the Dairy, the redundancy factor would be significantly increased,
21 is particularly the case here where the 3 million-cubic-foot pond capacity provides
22 more than adequate protection.
23 10. As a general contractor I am familiar with various styles of corral r ofs
24 used at dairies. Selection of this type of structure is up to the personal preference of
25 the operator. The installation of a concrete floor does not significantly add any
26 additional waste control benefit.
• 27 11. If roofs are to constructed over corrals at the Dairy, it will require
28 preparation of plans and specifications to be submitted to the San Joaquin County
t
5..
Declaration of Dan IL Schack In Support Of Objections to Plaintiffs Proposed Statement of Decision
