16 February 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0534
Each of these tasks is described in greater detail below.
3.1. PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITIES
A health and safety plan will be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health
Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities(National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1985).
Prior to mobilization, the area of excavation will be clearly marked and an utility clearance obtained
through Underground Service Alert.
3.2. SOIL EXCAVATION
Prior to backfilling and grading of the site, contaminated soil was detected in two location away
from the excavation of the USTs. Soil will be removal and stockpiled for transported to a licensed
landfill facility for disposal or on-site treatment.
Based upon laboratory results of soil samples collected and analyzed, additional impacted soil will
also be removed from the dispenser area and product line area and stockpiled for transport and
disposal or treatment. Soil will be excavated to a maximum depth of 15 feet below surface grade
(bsg) in the dispenser area and to 15 feet bsg in the product line area. The total volume anticipated
for removal is estimated to be 100 tons (approximately 65 cubic yards).
During excavation activities, excavated soil will be screened for volatile organic compounds using
an organic vapor monitor (OVM). Excavated soil that appears visibly stained or has a petroleum
hydrocarbon odor will be considered impacted. The OVM monitoring, along with filed observations
will direct and limit the excavation extent.
3.3. SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
A total of five soil samples will be collected from each of the excavations and will be submitted for
laboratory analysis. Following State of California Regional Water Quality Board, Tri-Regional
Board recommendations, soil samples will be collected from the base and each side wall of the
"new"excavation at a minimum interval of every 20 linear feet. Soil samples will be collected from
the base of the excavation at a minimum of one sample for every 400 square feet of excavation area.
Field procedures for collection of soil samples are presented in Section 4.2.
Advanced GeoEnvironmtnlal,Inc.
