4. Procedure <br /> When soil is ready to be sampled,the field staff person shall perform the following <br /> activities, not necessarily in the order listed. <br /> Soil Sampling Activities <br /> If the excavation is less than 5 feet deep and the field staff person is comfortable with the <br /> site conditions, the excavation may be entered to obtain samples directly from the <br /> sidewalls/bottom. If the excavation is 5 feet or deeper,the field staff person will not enter <br /> the excavation without direction from a "competent person" and/or adequate shoring <br /> (pursuant with OSHA requirements). <br /> • Soil shall be obtained from the desired location by means of the excavation equipment at <br /> the site (backhoe/excavator bucket), drill rig or hand auger, and brought to the ground <br /> surface for access.Near the teeth of the backhoe bucket, or at the bottom of the sample <br /> liner, soil will be scraped away using a clean trowel or other clean device. A clean brass <br /> or stainless steel sleeve, glass jar or En Core®sampler will then be pushed directly into <br /> the uncovered soil until full, or a new plastic 10 ml syringe will have the bottom end <br /> removed, and the syringe will be inserted into the exposed soil until approximately five <br /> milliliters of soil is collected. <br /> • Soil samples will be collected in one of three ways, depending on the constituents the <br /> laboratory will be requested to analyze for. <br /> 1. For laboratory analysis of non Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs), soil samples will <br /> be collected with laboratory supplied glass jars or clean brass or stainless steel sleeves. <br /> A six-inch filled sleeve of the sample will be capped with Teflon sheeting and plastic <br /> end caps, labeled, and sealed in a plastic storage bag. Glass jars are sealed with the <br /> supplied screw-lid after filling the jar. Sample numbers and sample time will be noted. <br /> Each sample will then be placed in an ice chest(chilled to 4°C)until delivered to a state- <br /> certified laboratory under chain-of-custody documentation. <br /> 2. For laboratory analysis of VOCs, soil samples will be collected using an En Core® <br /> sampler. As per EPA Method 5035, a new disposable En Core® Sampler will be <br /> placed in the En Core®handle. Three clean En Core® sample tubes will be driven <br /> into the soil adjacent to each other and filled completely to avoid air space. The En <br /> Core® sample tube will be retracted from the soil and capped with the locking cap, <br /> and inserted in the provided envelope. Each envelope will be labeled with the job <br /> number, the sample identification, date and time of collection,the sampler's name, <br /> and the analyses required. Each set of three En Core® samples will then be placed in <br /> an ice chest(chilled to 4°C) until delivered to a state-certified laboratory under <br /> chain-of-custody documentation, where they will weigh and preserve each sample <br /> within 48-hours of collection. A glass jar or sleeve will also be collected for <br /> laboratory screening or additional analyses, by capping a sample sleeve with Teflon <br /> sheeting, and tight-fitting plastic caps, or sealing the jar with the provided lid, and <br /> including it with the samples as described in Sections 1 and 3. <br /> 3. As an alternative to the EnCore®sampler for laboratory analysis of VOCs, soil samples <br /> may be collected with a clean syringe. As per EPA Method 5035, a new plastic 10 ml <br /> syringe will have the bottom end removed, and the syringe will be inserted into the <br /> SOP Soil Sampling for 5035 VOCs 2 of 4 August 2011 <br />
