Soil-Vapor Sampling and Analysis Work Plan
Former Shell Central Valley Crude-Oil Pipelines August 15,2007
Machado Property(Neighborhood B)Parcel 209-060-08 Page 4 of 4
• Leak testing will occur at each soil-vapor sample location to ensure that the seal around the probe
is adequate and ambient air is not diluting the sample. Immediately before sampling,a leak-
check compound(e.g.,tetrafluoroethane)will be placed at each probe connection where air could
enter the sampling system.
• Prior to sampling each location, the stagnant air in the sampling tubes will be removed; three
purge volumes will be removed at a rate of 200 mL/min.
• Soil-vapor samples will be collected in 6-liter Summarm canisters, which will be labeled with
identifying information and placed in a cooler for transportation to the laboratory.Chain-of-
custody documentation will be maintained for each sample collected.
Laboratory Analytical Method
Soil-vapor samples will be analyzed for BTEX. naphthalene, and tetrafluoroethane by U.S. EPA Method
TO-15.
REPORTING
Following receipt of analytical results, SAIC will prepare a report describing the results of the field
investigation. Based on the soil-vapor results,an evaluation will be made for potential risk of soil-vapor
migration from soil and/or groundwater to indoor air following property development. The soil-vapor
results will be compared to the soil-vapor values published in the document titled Use of California
Human Health Screening Levels (CHHSLs) in Evaluation of Contaminated Properties published by
CaUEPA in January 2005. Based on investigation results, SAIC will provide recommendations for
further site activities.
If you have any questions regarding this work plan, please call me at(510)466-7161.
Sincerely,
SCIENCE APPLICATIONS INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION
if
Michael Hurd, CHG 0068
Senior Environmental Project Manager
cc: See attached distribution list
Enclosures:
Figure 1: Vicinity Map
Figures 2-4: Proposed Soil-vapor Boring Locations
