Mr. Philip Isorena Proposal P93-040.31
July 12, 1993
Page 9
Iron
Total microbial count
Petroleum degrading microbial count
After reviewing the analytical results, we will evaluate the potential for biodegradative
activity occurring at the site and its possible relationship to the apparent contaminant
migration rate. The data obtained from this study will also be used to determine
techniques which may be used to increase the natural degradation rates.
Task 10. Aquifer Testing
Aquifer testing consisting of slug tests and bail down tests will be conducted to obtain
preliminary information on aquifer parameters, product distribution, and potential recovery
rates. These data can be used to design subsequent aquifer pumping tests and evaluate
product recovery methods. The proposed slug testing and bail down procedures are
described in the following two sections.
Slug Testing. Slug tests will be performed in selected groundwater monitoring wells to
obtain preliminary values of aquifer parameters for estimating the contaminant migration
potential. The specific number of slug tests will be based on the results of the results of
the CPT and HydroPunch sampling program. A selected number of wells will be
incorporated into the slug testing program based on variations in stratigraphy (amount and
distribution of sands). The slug tests will provide an order-of-magnitude estimate of
hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer material immediately adjacent to the screened
section. Parameters from the slug tests can be extrapolated to the surrounding area and
can be input to various analytical equations (e.g., Theis) to assist in planning and
designing subsequent aquifer tests. The design parameters include estimated maximum
drawdown, discharge rate, duration of pumping, and cone of depression radius. The
feasibility of conducting a long-term pumping test can be determined based on an
estimate of hydraulic conductivity from the slug test.
Bail Down Tests. A bail down test of floating product will be performed in
groundwater monitoring wells containing a minimum of 0.2 to 0.3 foot of free product
to evaluate the true thickness of free product on groundwater. Bail down tests will be
conducted on three wells (PS/MW-14, ST/MW-1, and TS/M-2) that contained product
thicknesses greater that 0.2 foot during the September 1992 synoptic water level
measurement event. Additional bail down tests will be conducted if free product, in
excess of 0.02 foot, is detected in wells during the 1993 monitoring and reporting
program.
SAC/PRMM304031.bc-93 1mc:5
