CRA will target the three source areas using the
proposed extraction wells for DPE pilot testing. These three extraction wells will be connected to the
existing groundwater extraction(GWE)system. Existing downwell pumps and piping will be utilized for
the DPH pilot test. The pumps will be started the week prior to the DPE testing to provide and assess
extended dewatering of saturated soils. To conduct the vapor extraction component of the DPE test,CRA
will make a vapor extraction connection to each target wellhead. Each target well will be tested
individually. CRA will incrementally increase the applied vacuum to determine the optimal extraction
rate (maximum airflow, rate). Once determined, CRA will set overnight DPE operation at the optimal
extraction rate to determine sustenanceofhydrocarbon vapors. CRA will also monitor groundwater
drawdown and induced vacuum in the proposed observation wells and other proximal wells during DPE.'
DPE will then be moved to the next extraction well and this protocol will be repeated. Extended DPE
testing of a select extraction well may be conducted following the initial one-day test to complete the five
days of testing. The following sections detail the tasks and information for the proposed pilot test:
Nottfkation:CRA will provide the required notification to the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control
District. -
Test Equipment: As discussed, CRA will used existing downwell pumps and GWE system piping. A
trailer-mounted liquid-ring pump and thermal/catalytic oxidizer(trailer)will be used to apply a vacuum to
the extraction well and to abate extracted vapors. The trailer requires the use of a generator for powering
and possibly propane for supplemental fuel. The trailer will be equipped with a liquid-separator to
remove entrained groundwater or condensation from the vapor stream. This water will be pumped from
the separator into the onsite storage tank.
The trailer will be equipped with controls to manage well flow, dilution airflow, pump vacuum, and well
vacuum data. A Thomas Industries model 907CDCISF vacuum pump will be used to collect the vapor
samples.A Horiba organic vapor analyzer will be used to field measure hydrocarbon concentrations in the
extracted vapor stream.Magnchelic differential pressure gauges will be used to measure induced vacuum
in adjacent wells. Pressure transducers and/or a water level meter will be used to measure groundwater
drawdown in adjacent wells. A Kent C700 flow-totalizing meter will continuously measure extracted
groundwater.
The trailer will abate the extracted soil vapors to comply with the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution
Control District requirements. The extracted groundwater will be temporarily stored in an onsite storage
241729 6 .
