Mr. William Crooks
January 9, 1991
Page 2
CIH Services, after reviewing available aerial photographs, believes that asbestos material
was placed on the property between 1963 and 1968. Because the asbestos material on the
property is composed of broken transite pipes and dried asbestos "sludge," Catellus believes it
is likely that these materials originated at the Johns Manville facility located at 1051 Sperry
Road, which is immediately northeast of the property. The Manville facility produced these two
types of waste for many years (see Johns Manville Solid Waste Assessment Test Report of June
27, 1990 by Kleinfelder, Inc., at 4).
Catellus is proceeding with additional interim measures consisting of stabilization of the
material and characterization of the extent of the material. These measures should be completed
within the next six weeks, at which time we will submit a report which describes these efforts
and contains recommendations for further remedial actions.
We would be pleased to meet with you at any time to discuss this situation. Further-
more, we would greatly appreciate your review of the report and any additional remedial actions
we propose to take to further protect public health and the environment.
If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact me at (415) 974-4617.
Sincerely,
IZI-c- f
Ric Notini
Director of Environmental Services
RLN/enm.crooks
cc: Jeff Tucker, CARWQCB
Val Siebel, California Department of Health Services, Region 1
Jeffrey Zelikson, United States Environmental Protection Agency
Janet Kee-fer, California Office of Emergency Services
