k" KLEINFELDER
File No 20-3941-01 E01
August 20, 1996
1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This is a report of Kleinfelder's limited subsurface investigation conducted on the Highway
120/McHenry Avenue Improvement Project in Escalon, California (see Plates I and 2) Mr
Thom Clark of the City of Escalon retained Kleinfelder to conduct the assessment in accordance
with our proposal dated April 16, 1996
Based on a review of files at the County of San Joaquin Public Health Services Department,
Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD), it appears that no regulatory closure was given for
any of the thirteen sites investigated
During our field work, Kleinfelder collected a total of ninety-eight (98) soil samples from
twenty-four (24) soil borings None of Kleinfelder's borings were advanced to a depth greater
r than 55 feet Groundwater likely exists at a depth of 65 to 70 feet, and therefore, was not
encountered in any of our borings
Sixty-two (62) of the ninety-eight (98) samples were analyzed Petroleum hydrocarbons were
detected in 23 of the 62 soil samples analyzed The hydrocarbons noted in the soil samples
analyzed can be generalized as follows
1 Boring B-I was advanced at the ARCO Station at 1305 Escalon Avenue The soil sample
from a depth of 2 feet contained low levels of "lubricating oil" which may be
representative of asphalt or asphalt leachate in the soil sample No detectable
hydrocarbons were present in the sample obtained from 5 feet Kleinfelder recommends
no further investigation or clean-up as a result of the hydrocarbons encountered in their
borings
2 Boring B-2 was advanced near a trailer house at the northwest corner of Paul's Indian
Store The soil sample obtained from a depth of 5 feet contained low to trace levels of
Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) and unidentified extractable hydrocarbons (UEH)
MTBE is used almost exclusively in gasoline (see Appendix F) Therefore, these
contaminants are likely due to surface spillage Kleinfelder recommends no further
investigation or clean-up as a results of these trace levels
3 Boring B-3 was advanced near the southeast corner of the Escalon R-V parcel (north of the
shop building) The sample obtained from a depth of 2 feet contained a trace level of
UEH The UEH may be a results of asphalt or asphalt leachate Additionally, no
detectable hydrocarbons were present in the sample obtained from a depth of 5 feet
20-3941-01 EOIIMR960163 Page I of 21 01996 Kleinfelder, Inc
