kn KLEINFELDER
File No 21-1941-01 E01
August 20, 1996
Kleinfelder recommends no further investigation or clean-up as a result of the
hydrocarbons encountered in their borings
4 Borings B-4 and B-5 were advanced in the McHenry Avenue right-of-way adjacent to
Tom Hillier Ford The two foot sample from each boring contains low to trace
concentrations of some heavy hydrocarbons The hydrocarbons present may be the result
of asphalt, oil street runoff, or minor surface drippings The concentrations present do not
appear to be of significance, and have attenuated to non-detectable levels by the 5 foot
samples Kleinfelder recommends no further investigation or clean-up as a result of the
hydrocarbons encountered in their borings
j1 5 Borings B-6 and B-7 were advanced in the McHenry Avenue right-of-way adjacent to
Friendly Chevrolet No contaminants were detected in the soil samples analyzed from the
borings
6 Borings B-8 and B-9 were advanced just outside of the former PG&E substation property
(within the City of Escalon right-of-way) Samples were obtained from depths of 2, 5, and
10 feet in each boi ing The samples obtained from depths of 2 and 5 feet in Boring B-8
contained low to trace concentrations of a lubricating oil range hydrocarbon However, the
' two samples did not contain any PCBs Additionally, the lubricating oil concentration had
attenuated to a non-detectable concentration by a depth of 10 feet The 10 foot sample
from Boi trig B-9 contained a trace concentration (1 3 mg/kg) of UEH in the <C20 carbon
range This level is barely above the laboratory reporting limit of 10 mg/kg Based on the
trace concentrations present, Kleinfelder would recommend no further investigation in this
area
7 Borings B-10, B-1 I and B-12 were advanced on the Shell Service Stationro ert Trace
p p Y
concentrations of UEH in the <C20 carbon range was present in the 5-foot sample of
Boring B-II and the 2-foot sample of Boring B-12 Based on the fact that the
hydrocarbons encountered are heavy hydrocarbons in the oil to asphalt carbon range, and
due to the lack of a known source other than the pavement itself, Kleinfelder recommends
no further investigation in this area
8 Borings B-13, B-14 and B-15 were advanced on the EZ Serve property to a depth of 25
feet No hydrocarbons were detected in the samples analyzed from Boring B-15 Trace
levels of some fuel constituents were present in the 2 and 25-foot samples from Boring B-
13 A concentration of 220 mg/kg TPH-Lubricating Oil was detected in the 2-foot sample
from Boring B-14 The concentrations of lubricating oil had attenuated to non-detectable
levels by a depth of 5 feet Although Kleinfelder would recommend no further
investigation or clean-up as a result of the chemical analysis conducted, the potential for
contamination on this site still exists The City of Escalon must realize that Kleinfelder's
scope of work was limited to CALTRANS District 10's requirements, and that the only
method of detecting if contamination exists on site as a results of the station's activities
will be observation and sampling during site demolition and during the removal of the
20-3941-01 E011MR960163 Page 2 of 21 191996 Kleinfelder Inc
