Box 2009
1601 East Hazelton Avenue
Stockton, CA 95201-6229
RE: ADDENDUM TO SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION PILOT STUDY WORK PLAN
Montgomery Ward Auto Service Center
5400 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA
(Site Code 2163)
Dear Mr. Infurna:
This letter will serve as an Addendum to the Soil Vapor Extraction Pilot Study Work Ian
(dated August 2, 1996) prepared by Environmental Audit, Inc. (EAI) for the above-referenced
site. This Addendum was prepared to address San Joaquin County Public Health Services
(County Health) comments regarding the Work Plan as outlined in County Health's letter dated
August 9, 1996.
Vertical Extent of Soil Contamination
As requested, the boring for vapor extraction well VEW-1B will be extended to a depth of 65
feet below ground surface (bgs) (see Work Plan, Figure 10). Additional soil samples w 11 be
collected at depth of 50, 55, 60 and 65 feet bgs. Note that most of these soil samples w 11 be
collected from intervals below the current depth to ground water (saturated zone) beneat i the
site. These soil samples will be tested for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TP -G)
by modified EPA Method 8015, and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX and
methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) by EPA Method 8020. If MTBE is detected in any of the
soil samples by EPA Method 8020, it will be quantified in selected samples by EPA Mtthod
8260.
To address County Health concerns regarding the vertical extent of contamination between the
two plumes, i.e., former underground storage tanks (USTs) location and former fuel islands
location, soil vapor probe SP-713 will be drilled to 65 feet bgs (see Work Plan, Figure 10).
Additional soil samples will be collected at five-foot intervals from depths of 35 to 65 feel bgs.
Note that soil samples collected from depths greater than 50 feet bgs will be collected from
within the saturated zone. These samples will be tested for TPH-G, BTEX and MTBE as
described above.
1 `
PLANNING,ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSES AND
HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES MANAGEMENTAND REMEDIATION
