The report concluded that it was possible to find a site on the
campus that was no closer than 2,000 feet from any existing or abandoned gas
station. The report determined that a site in the east end of Budd 2 parking lot
was equidistant from all existing or abandoned gas stations that surround the
campus and was an ideal location for a new well from a hydrogelolgic standpoint.
Subsequently, the County, State, and oil company representatives agreed with
the report's conclusion, and in December of 2000 a exploratory well was drilled In
the parking lot. The pilot hole was electric logged, material samples retrieved,
and water samples taken. The results of the analysis of water samples found
that water from the exploratory well was free of hydrocarbons and would be
acceptable for landscape irrigation.
An estimate of the costs of constructing the well at that location was prepared in
March of 2001. The estimate included costs of constructing the well and ancillary
facilities as well as the cost of connecting the well to irrigation main lines and
electrical service. With the site lying some distance from existing irrigation main
lines and electrical service, these facilities would need to be extended to serve
the new well. The cost of extending electrical and piping services was estimated
to be $146,200.
OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this study is to investigate other potential sites on the Campus
where the replacement irrigation well could be constructed. The investigation will
focus on a site that meets the following criteria:
1, Generally as far away from all existing or abandoned gas stations as
possible.
2. Generally as far away from the existing irrigation well as possible.
3. Close to the College's 12 kV electrical distribution loop.
4. Close to existing irrigation main line loop.
5. A minimum of 50 feet away from any existing storm drain or sanitary
sewer line.
6. In an area that can easily be developed with minimal disruption to existing
facilities,
7. In an area that can be easily accessed by service vehicles.
DISCUSSION
The conclusions reached in the original engineering study are still valid in that
being as far away from any existing or abandoned gas station as possible will
have the lowest risk for potential problems. The distance used to determined the
likely area in the original report was 2,100 feet in any direction from any existing
1
