Marty Harzel • • EAI Project No. 1232
September 17, 2001
Page 2
toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) by EPA
Method 8021. No MTBE confirmation analysis by EPA Method 8260B was completed. The
ground water samples collected from wells MW-2 and MW-3 had a gasoline odor.
The results of the testing are compiled in Table 1. The chain of custody record and laboratory
report are attached. No detectable concentrations of chemicals were encountered in the sample
collected from well MW4. Well MW-4 is located next to air sparging well VEW-8. It is
probable that sparging air was bubbling through well MW-4 stripping out all dissolved
hydrocarbons. The analytical data for the ground water samples collected from wells MW-2
and MW-4, exhibited a reduction in the concentrations of dissolved components.
Field VOC Reading
After restarting the air sparging compressor, volatile organic compound (VOC) reading were
taken from vapor extraction wells using a PID instrument. All readings were insignificant, i.e.,
at or just slightly above the background level.
Soil Vapor Testing
The thermal oxidizer was started to obtain soil vapor data. Immediately after the start-up, the
VOC reading from the inlet of the oxidizer, using a PID, was in the range of 300 ppmv which
dropped to 145 ppmv in approximately five minutes. The soil vapor and combustion gases
samples were then collected in Tedlar bags. These samples were analyzed for TPH, BTEX and
MTBE (see Table 2). The chain of custody record and laboratory report are attached.
The oxidizer was left running for several days and was shut-down on August 30, 2001.
Between June 22, 2001 and August 27, 2001, the oxidizer was in operation for approximately
197 hours resulting in removal of approximately 47 pounds of hydrocarbons. The sparging
compressor was in operation for approximately 665 hours.
Current Status
The thermal oxidizer is shut-down, and the sparging compressor is running in a "pulse" mode,
i.e., three days online and four days offline.
Please call me at (714) 632-8521, ext. 240 or Steven Bright at ext. 224 if you have any
questions.
Distribution List
Mike Infurna
San Joaquin PHS-EHD
304 East Weber Street
Stockton, CA 95201
B5:1232:MEMO-RWQM
