SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION PILOT STUDY REPORT San Joaquin County <br /> Montgomery Ward Auto Service Center Public Health Services Department <br /> 5400 Pacific Avenue, Stockton,CA Site Code 2153 <br />' ■ Extracting soil vapors from two vapor extraction wells, <br /> ■ Treating extracted vapors using a thermal oxidizer, <br />' ■ Monitoring pressure at VES well and soil vapor probe locations, <br /> ■ Measuring the concentration of extracted vapors using field laboratory instruments, and <br /> ■ Measuring pressure readings and vapor concentrations as a function of time and <br />' distance <br /> Key elements of the design for the air sparging test included the following <br />' ■ Injecting air below the ground water table at VEW-1B at different rates and at various <br /> pulsed time intervals, and <br />' ■ Measuring dissolved oxygen level, vapor concentrations, and ground water <br /> concentrations <br />' 4.2 Vapor Extraction And Treatment Unit <br /> A Thermal Oxidizer was used as the vapor extraction and treatment unit for the pilot study <br /> Figure 6 shows a schematic design of the unit Important specifications are as follows <br /> FIow Rate 250 SCFM at 8" Hg vacuum <br /> Operating Temperature Range 1400-1500 of <br /> Vacuum Pump 10 0 HP <br /> Treatment Method Thermal Oxidation <br /> Burner Rating 850,000 BTU/hr <br /> I Destruction Capacity 730 lbs/day <br /> Treatment Efficiency 98 to 99% <br /> Supplemental Fuel (propane) 5 PSIG <br /> IThe unit was equipped with a knockout pump, a flow meter and pressure gauges <br /> 4.3 Air Sparging System <br /> The air sparging unit consisted of a 2 HP compressor and a 100 pounds per square inch (psi) <br /> pressure regulator Figure 7 provides a schematic design of the unit The compressor was <br /> able to generate continuous stream of air source at the rate of 5 cubic feet per minute (cfm) <br /> and at a pressure of 30 psi The pressure regulator was used to control the intervals and length <br /> of time during which air was infected into VEW-113 <br /> 4.4 Targeted Design Parameters <br /> The data obtained from field measurements was used to calculate the following design <br /> Iparameters <br /> ■ Radius of Influence (RoI), <br /> N Soil Permeability (K), <br /> = Effective vapor extraction equipment, <br /> ■ Effective vapor treatment equipment, <br /> ■ Effective VES well configuration, <br /> Project No 1232 - 4 - ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT, INC <br />
