' FOURTH QUARTER 1998 GROUND WATER MONITORING REPORT San Joaquin County Montgomery Ward Auto Service Center Puhlic Health Services Department ' 5400 Pacific Avenue,Stockton CA Site Code 2153 2 2 GROUND WATER SAMPLING ' On December 22, 1998, ground water samples were collected by EAI from all ground water monitoring wells associated with the Montgomery Ward site Additionally, EAI sampled four of the vapor extraction wells (VEW-2B, VEW-3, VEW-4 and VEW-5) at the Site since these wells were screened near the top of the ground water Well VEW-213 Is screened between 35 to 50 feet bgs Wells VEW-3, VEW-4 and VEW-5 are screened between 20 to 30 feet and 40 to 50 feet with a blank section between 30 and 40 feet bgs Wells VEW 1 A (screened at 10 to 25 feet) and VEW-2 (screened at 15 to 35 feet) were not sampled Well VEW-113 was not sampled since ' it contained equipment which made the well water Inaccessible to sample Prior to sampling, the wells were purged using a Grundfos MP-1 submersible pump ' Temperature, conductivity, pH, and turbidity were recorded to evaluate the effectiveness of purging activities (see Appendix A) The wells were sampled in the order that purging activities were completed Water samples were collected from each well from just below the water surface using Voss Technologies disposable bottom bailers equipped with volatile organic compound ' sampling tips The use of these bailers precludes the potential for cross-contamination Each water sample was scaled in three 40-milliliter volatile organic analysis (VOA) vials with ' Teflon septa lined lids The VOA vials were completely filled so that no head space existed between the sample and the lids The samples were labeled with the sample point identification, preservative added, if any, date, time and EAI project number, and immediately placed Into a chilled ice chest The samples were kept chilled until delivered to the laboratory for analytical testing All samples were logged on a chain of custody record form (see Appendix B) 23 SAMPLING EQUIPMENT CLEANING PROTOCOL ' The submersible pump and hose system (Equipment), used only to purge the wells prior to sampling, was decontaminated between each event using the following procedure ■ The Equipment was flushed in a solution of Alconox detergent and tap water, and e The Equipment was flushed with tap water 24 EFFLUENT HANDLING All effluent generated during purging, sampling and equipment decontamination activities was sealed in labeled 55-gallon drums The drums were stored in a secured area on the Montgomery Ward site pending proper disposal 25 DELTA COLLEGE WELL In addition to the Unocal and Montgomery Ward site wells a Delta College irrigation well located west of Pacific Avenue was also sampled (see Table 2) IProject No 1232 - 2 - ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT, INC
