Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
Appendix B: Standard Operating Guideline
_ Reconnaissance Groundwater Sampling and Cone
Penetration Testing Procedures
13.1 Introduction
This guideline describes the equipment and procedures which will be used by Kennedy/Jenks
Consultants personnel for collecting in situ soil resistance and friction data and reconnaissance
groundwater samples.
B.2 Equipment
• Cone penetration testing (CPT)truck or CPT-adaptable drilling rig
• Groundwater collection device
• Hydropunch system
• BAT system
• Well-point system
• Steam cleaner
Water level probe
• Trisodium phosphate (TSP) soap
• 5-gallon buckets
• Stiff-bristle brushes
• Deionized water
• Type II Portland cement
• Sample containers/labels
• Chain-of-custody forms
• Personal protective equipment
6.3 Sampling Procedures
1. The CPT operator will calibrate and advance the CPT probe in accordance with ASTM
Standard D 3441-86.
2. The CPT probe (approximately 2 inches in diameter)will be advanced at a consistent,
controlled rate of 0.03 to 0.07 feet/second to the desired depth using the rig's hydraulic rams.
3. The probe will be advanced at a constant rate and measurements of cone tip resistance, sleeve
friction resistance, pore pressure (if specified), and inclination will be made.
4. The field log will record depth, cone tip resistance, friction resistance, friction ratio, inclination,
soil type, and pore pressure and pore pressure ratio (if measured). The field log will be provided
to the field geologist/engineer for review before the rig is moved to another location.
Groundwater Protection Work Plan, The Wine Group B-1
Franzia Winery, Ripon, California
gtis pla0minWIOMW12002_win"pM0 pahlworlpIoWpa&CK ppbre ,td.
