W1GR
• Southwest, Inc.
appropriate depth intervals were cut from the sleeve lengths, and the cut ends of the samples
were immediately sealed with Teflon® film and polyethylene caps.
The soil samples were labeled with all pertinent sampling information and packed on ice for
subsequent delivery to a State of California certified laboratory for analysis. The soil in the
remaining sample sleeves and the hand auger cuttings were described and logged by a
California Professional Geologist (PG) in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification
System (USCS). The boring logs for B-1 through B-18 are presented in Appendix A.
Sampling equipment was decontaminated between sampling episodes using a triple rinse
method consisting of a wash with Alconox® (or equivalent) solution, an initial rinse with tap
water, and a final rinse with deionized water. Applicable QA/QC procedures were adhered to
during drilling, sampling and sample handling.
All samples were collected in accordance with the methodology outlined in the work plan
approved by the SJCEHD and are considered valid. The soil samples were transported to the
analytical laboratory under appropriate chain-of-custody documentation at the end of each
field day. A portable organic vapor analyzer (OVA) was utilized as necessary for health and
• safety monitoring of air quality for volatile organic compounds during drilling. OVA readings
elevated above ambient air conditions were not detected during drilling operations.
8.3 Groundwater Grab Sampling
Subsequent to drilling each of the 18 soil borings, temporary 3/4-inch-diameter PVC casings
were placed in the borings. Screened sections measuring 5- or 10-foot-long were placed at the
bottoms of the borings and attached to blank sections of casing which extended to the ground
surface. The casings were left in place and at the end of the day groundwater samples were
collected from the borings in the order they had been drilled. This allowed the maximum
recharge to occur without leaving the borings open overnight. The groundwater grab samples
were collected by lowering a Hydropunch®groundwater sampler into the cased borings attached
to new disposable '/-inch-diameter polyethylene tubing and a peristaltic pump or by lowering
clean disposable bailers into the cased borings. A groundwater sample was not recovered from
B-15,which had no recharge.
The grab samples were immediately transferred to the appropriate laboratory containers, labeled
with all pertinent sampling information and packed in an ice-filled cooler. Applicable QA/QC
procedures were adhered to during sampling and sample handling. The groundwater samples
• were transported to a State of California certified laboratory under appropriate chain-of-custody
704. PRI.05 19 July 21, 2008
