WtC R
Southwest, Inc.
•
2.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES
The field activities included advancing shallow soil borings at 8 locations within the proposed lease
area. The boring locations were selected based on the results of the Phase I ESA, input from Yara
regarding future site use, and accessibility at the site. Figure 3 shows the boring locations relative to
Yara's proposed building construction.
Prior to performing the field work, WGR permitted the borings with San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department (SJCEHD). The permitting included a fee and submission of a
work plan. Copies of the approved permit and the work plan are included in Appendix A.
RSI Drilling of Woodland, California used a direct push drill rig to advance the borings. The direct
push rig utilizes four-foot long sampling tubes which are connected and advanced into the hole until
the maximum required depth is obtained. Due to the manufactured lengths of the direct push
• samplers (4 feet), borings 131 and B2 were advanced to 4 feet bgs, but samples were collected at 3
feet bgs as proposed. Similarly, borings B3 through B8 were advanced to 8 feet bgs but sampled at
6 feet bgs. The sample depths were selected to be below the anticipated depth of soil disturbance
anticipated by Yara during site construction activities. In the area of borings B1 and B2, Yara
anticipated that approximately the upper two feet of soil will be disturbed or removed, and in the
area of the other borings,Yara anticipated the upper 5 feet of soil will be disturbed or removed.
One soil sample was collected from each boring. The soil samples were collected into acetate
sleeves, sealed with Teflon tape, capped and placed into iced storage pending transportation to a
California certified laboratory. The sampling tools were decontaminated between each hole.
After the sample was collected, the direct push probe was extracted and the hole was filled with
bentonite grout to near surface, and capped with asphalt to match surrounding grade. Inspector
Mike Infurna, SJCEHD, observed and approved the backfilling of the holes.
The soil samples were submitted under chain of custody protocol to McCampbell Analytical, Inc.
of Pittsburg, CA. All samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd)
(Method 8015), semivolatile organics (SVOCs) (Method 8270B), volatile organics plus
•
773.
