The relatively large <br /> percentage of the selectively biodegrading subpopulation indicates that much of this metabolic <br /> ' activity is directed against target petroleum hydrocarbons. <br /> With the exception of a relatively high pH, physicochemical values associated with the soil <br /> samples are generally within acceptable limits for microbial growth and metabolic activity. <br /> Microbiological data for soil also supports target-specific metabolic activity, although absolute <br /> numbers of both general and selective microbial subpopulations are generally lower than would <br /> be expected for nutrient-competent soil samples. These data may reflect the presence of low <br /> levels of biotoxicity, and/or minimal levels/bioavailability of carbon sources. It would be helpful <br /> to review the analytical data associated with these samples to assist in reconciling this matter. <br /> In general, the data for these samples are consistent with ongoing natural bioattenuation; <br /> however, it is recommended that periodic physicochemical and microbiological monitoring <br /> ' should be conducted in order to ensure the maintenance of environmental conditions <br /> (bionutrient concentrations, etc.) supporting such activity. <br /> Should you have any questions concerning these results, please do not hesitate to contact me. <br /> AKK:ch <br /> [NOTE: In order to ensure reliability of results, samples hould be submitted for analyses within <br /> 48 hours of collection (max.) and be transported in a cooled state via the use of cold packs.] <br /> 1 <br /> . -.,....
