MEMORANDUM i
+ CALI0RNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD + CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
3443'Routier Road, Suite A Phone: (916) 255-3000
Sicramento, CA 95627-3098 CALNET: 8-494-3000
Y_
To: GORDON L. BOGGS FROM: ELIZABETH A. THAYER
UGT Program Coordinator Associate Engineer .
4
DATE: August 13, 1993 SIGNATURE:
SUBJECT: ROND PROPERTY, 7001. ROND ROAD, LODI, SAN JOAQUI N COUNTY +
SITE HISTORY
Upon the death of their father, Fred Rond, Patricia Duncan and Vi Baker became Co-Trustees of his
estate. Included in his estate was a ranch with two underground farm tanks. One of which was a
1.000 gallon diesel tank and the other was a 500 gallon gasoline tank. In March 1992, the tanks,
were excavated by Thorpe Oil Co. i
Two soil samples were collected'by GeoAnalytical Laboratories, one assumed to be mid-tank at a f r
depth of 10 feet, labeled "Middle 10"' and the other near the fill end of the tank at a depth of 10
p  P
feet, labeled "Fill end g 10"' "Middle 0 10"' was analyzed for kerosene, diesel, and motor oil.
A
All three constituents were not detected. The same sample was also analyzed for benzene, toluene,
ethyl benzene, and total xylene. Benzene was.not found but 14 µg/kg toluene, 6.8 Ag/kg ethyl
benzene, and 65 µg/kg total xylene were found. The other soil sample, was analyzed for BTEX
and gasoline. Benzene was not detected, however, toluene was found at 1.32 µg/kg; ethyl benzene
was'found at 120 µg/kg, total- Xylene was found at 900 µg/kg, and gasoline was found at 22 mg/kg.. fi
From discussions with County staff, depth to ground water is less than 15 feet and}the direction of {
ground water flow has not,been determined but is believed to be variable due to agricultural
Pumping. Because of the shallow ground water, it is-likely that ground.water,has been
contaminated. Based on the soil contamination and site conditions, County staff requested that three
monitoring wells be installed to detect the presence of contamination in ground water and the ground
water flow direction. :.,
'rw site information we have for this site consists of the laboratory sheets for the soil samples l
collected during the excavation and telephone conversations with County staff. This information is
not sufficient to determine if'ground water has been impacted and, therefore,. we cannot make a
closure determination. The following information is not in our file: • ,t _
I: A site map showing the general site and location of the tanks;
2. The location of the soil samples in the excavation, :
t
3. Whether the tanks were excavated atel together or separately;
g P Y:
4. The condition of the tanks upon removal;
ksl
