ENCLOSURE 2
DEFENSE DISTRIBUTION REGION WEST
SHARPE SITE
OPERABLE UNIT 2 - COMPREHENSIVE SITE-WIDE REMEDIATION
LIKELY REMEDIAL ALTERNATIVES
Operable Unit (OU) 2 consists of soil contamination at various
locations and ground water contamination by metals and
polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (i.e. ground water contamination
by volatile previously covered in OU 1 - Ground Water Record of
Decision) . Detailed information on OU 2 is provided in Enclosure
1. The likely remedial alternatives to be evaluated for
remediation of OU 2 include:
SOILS CONTAMINATION WITH METALS AND PCBs
1) Construction and maintenance of a low permeability cap over
areas of significant soil contamination.
2) Excavation of contaminated materials with on-site treatment to
solidify mobile contaminants and on-site disposal of treated
materials.
3) Excavation of the contaminated materials with disposal to an
approved off-site disposal facility.
SOILS CONTAMINATED WITH VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
1) Installation and operation of an in-situ vapor extraction
system with emission controls by granular activated carbon
(GAC) filtration.
2) No additional remedial actions, but continued operation of
existing ground water extraction and treatment systems. The
existing ground water treatment systems consists of two air
strippers with no emission control devices and one proposed
air stripper with emission control by GAC filtration.
SOILS CONTAMINATED WITH PESTICIDES
1) Excavation of contaminated materials with on-site treatment by
soils washing.
2) Excavation of contaminated materials with on-site treatment by
incineration.
3) Excavation of contaminated materials with on-site treatment by
bio-remediation.
4) Excavation of the contaminated materials with disposal to an
approved off-site disposal facility.
