C-SHADRIFS91.6/GW PP.6
01/22/92
SUMMARY OF SITE RISKS
The groundwater at SHARPE occurs in a series of four distinct aquifer units that
are interconnected to varying degrees, resulting in a high potential for
contaminant movement between the aquifers. Environmental studies at SHARPE
have indicated contamination in parts of the North and South Balloon Areas and
the Central Area. Migration of VOCs, including TCE, in groundwater appears to
originate from source areas at SHARPE. Other potential contaminants, detected
only sporadically in SHARPE groundwater, include arsenic, selenium, and
bromacil, which are nonvolatile compounds.
The primary volatile organics of concern at SHARPE are trichloroethene (TCE)
and tetrachloroethene (PCE).
The potential exposure pathways to groundwater at SHARPE are ingestion of
groundwater, dermal contact (for example, showering), and inhalation of
volatilized VOCs. However, since the contamination plume has not reached any
drinking water wells, people are not being exposed to the chemicals at this time.
Exposure could occur in the future if the contamination plume is allowed to
continue to migrate or if new wells are constructed within the contaminated
areas. Remedial measures are proposed to stop migration of the contamination
plume and to clean up areas already contaminated.
The groundwater risk assessment concluded that the carcinogenic risks and
noncarcinogenic threats associated with groundwater at the site exceed EPAs
recommended safe levels. Using a hypothetical future scenario in which a well
may be installed into any one of the onsite aquifers, the risk again will exceed
the EPA guidance.
7
