C-SHADRIFS91.6/GW PP.18 <br /> 01/22/92 <br /> Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)--A Federal law that established <br /> a regulatory system to track hazardous substances from the time of generation to <br /> the time of disposal. The law requires safe and secure procedures to be used in <br /> treating, transporting, storing, and disposing of hazardous substances. RCRA is <br /> designed to prevent new, uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. <br /> Remediation--An action which will rehabilitate contaminated media (such as <br /> groundwater) to the appropriate levels, as defined by EPA. <br /> Response Action--A CERCLA-authorized action at a Superfund site involving <br /> either a short-term removal action or a long-term remedial response. <br /> Risk Assessment--The qualitative and quantitative evaluation performed as part of <br /> the remedial investigation in an effort to define the risk posed to public health <br /> and the environment. <br /> Superfund--See CERCLA. <br /> Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA)--A Federal law passed <br /> in 1986 which modified the 1980 CERCLA Superfund law by strengthening EPAs <br /> authority, state involvement, and opportunities for public participation. <br /> Additional Superfund revenues were also granted. <br /> U.S. Army Toxic and Hazardous Materials Agency (USATHAMA)--U.S. Army <br /> agency tasked with performing RI/FSs at Army Superfund sites. <br /> U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)--Federal agency charged with <br /> implementing SARA and other federal environmental regulations. <br /> 23 <br />
