• i . Containers holding wastes incompatible with wastes nearby are <br /> separated by a dike or other barrier from those nearby wastes. <br /> As previously discussed, Building 530 does not accept wastes which could <br /> be incompatible since only wastes identified, as contaminated sands from <br /> sandblasting operation can be stored in this building. <br /> Several operational procedures are enforced to ensure that incompatible <br /> wastes are separated adequately in Building 605. <br /> The holding bays are to only be used in the event that a drum of unknown <br /> materials is received. This is to ensure that the drum is not placed in a <br /> non-compatible holding area. A maximum of 18 drums can be stored in the <br /> holding bays. <br /> When a drum containing an unknown is received, it will be palletized and, <br /> by forklift, be placed in the containment area. Samples will be drawn for <br /> testing to determine the contents of the drum. Once the contents have been <br /> identified, the drum will be placed in the appropriate area of Building 605 <br /> to be stored until it can be disposed of. <br /> The quantity of unknown wastes expected at Building 605 is minimal and <br /> the holding bays are merely a safety precaution to avoid any mishaps. These <br /> drums will be stored in the holding bay only for the duration of the testing. <br /> • It is important to note that the berm height of all holding bays is six <br /> inches and unknowns are stored approximately 50 feet from any identified <br /> waste storage area. <br /> j. Empty containers contaminated with hazardous wastes are handled as <br /> hazardous waste or recycled. <br /> Used, unwashed empty containers are handled as hazardous waste and are <br /> placed in the storage area. <br /> k. Containers subject to deterioration from the weather are protected. <br /> All hazardous waste containers stored at the Sharpe facility are <br /> inspected weekly for deterioration resulting from any possible condition. If <br /> a container is found to be leaking or starting to deteriorate, the container <br /> is placed in overpack immediately and absorbent is used to contain the spill <br /> and minimize any potential dispersal . <br /> 1 . Containers holding PCBs or devices containing PCBs are managed in <br /> accordance with Part 761 , Title 40 , Code of Federal Regulations. <br /> The containers that are used for PCB storage are DOT approved and are <br /> labeled. These containers stored in Building 605 are managed according to 40 <br /> CFR 761 and further information presented in Section VI of this document. <br /> Sampling procedures for PCB wastes were presented in Attachment VIII-2. <br /> • VIII-18 <br />
