. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Groundwater samples were collected from five monitor wells and two domestic wells at the Gillies
Trucking yard at 3931 Newton Road on May 28, 2002 The depth to groundwater was
approximately 58 feet in most wells, and the data were contoured to yield a map of the piezometric
surface The elevation contours form a sinuous pattern that is highly atypical of water-table
aquifers, and the pattern is interpreted to be the result of non-equilibrium conditions Currently, the
static water level is within a low-permeability clay bed that separates the first and second aquifers at
the site, and the water table has apparently been unable to adjust to a uniform level As a result, the
hydraulic gradient and groundwater flow direction are variable
All samples were analyzed for TPH-diesel, and two samples were also analyzed for TPH-gasoline,
BTEX, and gasoline oxygenates Diesel was detected in three of the seven samples and gasoline
was detected in one The diesel concentration declined in one well and increased in the other two
The changes are within historical ranges, and no particular sigmficance can be attached to them
The extent, magnitude, and historical trends of both soil and groundwater contamination are
reviewed and used to draw conclusions regarding future activities at the site Due to limited
remedial options and the likelihood that further investigation or monitoring will not produce
significant new findings that could affect the outcome for the site, we recommend that monitoring
be reduced in frequency and that no further investigation be considered We also suggest that the
existing domestic well be retained but that the water should be treated at the well-head using
granulated activated carbon to remove any hydrocarbons that may occasionally impact this well
- I
1
