MW10 was later installed off-site on Rosemarie Lane in April
1988 .
Dissolved hydrocarbons were detected in the groundwater both
upgradient and downgradient of the site. Monitoring well MW8 ,
installed a few feet downgradient from the Shell station and
upgradient to the subject site, has contaminated soil below the
water table at concentrations of 3200 mg/kg TPH and of 12 , 150
and 260 mg/kg for benzene, toluene, and xylenes, respectively. As
discussed in the draft EA report dated April 1988 , the major
source of the hydrocarbons in the groundwater appears to be a
Shell service station west of the site, across North Pershing
Avenue. The investigation indicates that hydrocarbon
contamination of groundwater in the vicinity of former Exxon RS
7-3942 extends beyond the region covered by work conducted to
date. An upgradient source of hydrocarbons is also suggested by
the occurrence of high levels of soil and groundwater
contamination at monitoring wells to the west and upgradient to
the site ( MW8 and MW9 ) .
EA has continued to gauge and sample the wells. The results of
the gauging are summarized in Table 2 . In brief , free product
appeared in well MW3 between 29 July 1988 and 18 October 1988 .
Free product has appeared intermittently in well MW6 since 7
April 1988 .
2
