(11/87)
2. Blank and Background Samples
* Blank Samples
Blank samples are required for water sampling only. Collect at least one
blank/day/shipment/lab.
Blank samples are a check for cross-contamination during sample collection
and shipment and in the laboratory. Use analytically certified organic
free water for organic parameters. Use deionized water for inorganic
parameters.
Blank samples should be analyzed for the conplete parameter suite. The
blank is collected, numbered, packaged, and sealed in the sane manner as
the other samples.
Only one type of blank need be collected. Blanks are listed below in
order of collection preference.
a. Equipment Blank
Collect after the last rinse of the equipment decontamination process.
Use the appropriate "blank" water identified above to fill equipment and
then pour it into the appropriate containers. An equipment blank should
be collected each time the sampling equipment is decontaminated and
reused in the field.
b. Field Bottle Blank
Collect when decontamination of equipment is not necessary or possible.
The field bottle blank should be poured at a sampling point.
c. VOA Tavel Blank
Collect when there is no other type of VOA blank. All of the VOA vials
should be shipped in the sane container as the VOA blank.
* Background Samples (soil & surface water)
Background samples should be analyzed for the complete parameter suite.
Background is collected, numbered, packaged, and sealed in the sane
manner as the other samples.
Collect 10% background samples for long term sampling projects.
* Blank and background samples must be identified on the Region 9 copy of
the sanple paperwork, not the lab copy. These samples are blind to the lab.
3. Lab QC Samples
* Select one field sample Der week or 1 per 20 samples (including blanks and
duplicates) , whichever is greater, and designate that sample as the "Lab
QC Sample" . This sample is quality control sample for laboratory duplicate
and matrix spike analyses.
- 8 -
