• Biomass chipping, collection and transportation;
• Used oil collection and transportation;
• Biomass processing and briquetting;
• Oil treatment and recycling; and
• Briquette transportation.
Of the energy consumed in the production of recycled fuel , by far
the greatest amount would be the oil required to run the dryers. The
dryers would, in "Phase 1" of the project, use a maximum of 1,600 gallons
of oil per day, or 481,600 gallons per year. The total initial applica-
tion for the recycled oil would be on-site; 822 gallons per day of the
recycled oil (or 280,300 gallons per year) would be blended with 778
gallons per day of virgin distillate to form the 1,600 gallons of oil per
day needed for the drying operation.
The second largest consumer of energy would be the trucks for haul -
ing the raw materials to the project site. Assuming 24 truckloads a day
and an average round trip distance of 28 miles, a total of 144 gallons of
gasoline per day (43,340 gallons per year) would be used in the
collection and delivery of the biomass. The boiler that drives the oil
recycling process would use eight gallons of oil per day or 2,400 gallons
per year. The total known energy input is therefore the equivalent of
about 527,340 gallons of oil per year.
The energy resources that would be conserved through the use of
recycled fuels involve several applications including: 1) recycled oil
as process boiler and dryer fuel ; 2) biomass briquettes to be burned for
electrical power generation; and 3) recycled oil that can be sold. In
Phase 1 of the project, only the production of briquettes would be the
net energy output of the facility, since all recycled oil will be used
on-site. Yearly production of biomass fuel is projected to be about
216,000 tons after three years into the project ("Phase 2") . At 1.6
million BTUs per ton of briquette fuel and about 13,810 BTUs per gallon
of oil , the equivalent amount of oil produced by the facility would be
25.03 million gallons a year. When energy inputs and outputs are
compared, outputs are far higher, since only 2.1 percent of the amount of
3-83
101-35.R2 4/11/89
