At that time BP(formerly Sohio) was planning to investigate
two locations on the property cited above. A potential buyer had collected soil samples at the
site for engineering tests in June 1989 and also had them analyzed for organic chemical
contamination. The results showed low levels of chloroform as reported in the January 23
letter. BP suspected that these were laboratory artifacts because the levels were near the
detection limits and BP had never used halogenated chemicals at the site. Furthermore, the
locations of the samples were not near each other, while the rest of the samples were clean.
On April 5, 1990 two soil borings were advanced with a hollow-stem auger at locations
immediately adjacent to the site of the previous borings, B-1 and B4, and samples taken,
including samples at depths corresponding to the previously indicated chloroform readings.
Enseco was instructed to analyze the samples using the same method as used previously,EPA
method 8010. The results are described in the enclosed report by Enseco and show no
contamination. As suspected,it is most likely that the earlier readings were indeed laboratory
artifacts.
If you have any further questions please contact me at(216)581-5659 or W. Gang Willis,BP
Oil Pipeline HSEQ Administrator at(216)581-5659.
G
Gretchen C.
