A
potential buyer had collected soil samples at the site for engineering tests in June 1989 and
also had them analyzed for organic chemical contamination. The analyses had showed low
levels of chloroform in two borings. BP suspected that these were laboratory artifacts because
the levels were near the detection limits and BP had never used halogenated chemicals at the
site. Furthermore, the locations of the samples were not near each other, while the rest of the
samples were clean.
On April 5, 1990 two soil borings were advanced under SJHD permit no. 90-425 with a
hollow-stem auger at locations immediately adjacent to the site of the previous borings,B-1
and B4. Soil samples were taken, including samples at depths corresponding to the
previously indicated chloroform readings. Enseco was instructed to analyze the samples using
the same method as used previously,EPA method 8010. The results are described in the
attached report by Enseco and show no contamination. As suspected, it is most likely that the
earlier readings were indeed laboratory artifacts.
If you have any further questions please contact me at(216)581-5659 or W.
