E 11111
ill, III, V12IFFIR! •11179 112211111 gyliiii EG=
Pam Violett and I arrived at Interlake Inc. at approximately 10: 10 am. 114b
identified ourselves at the front desk and asked to speak to the individual in
charge of the hazardous waste management. We were told to see Paul
Maxwell, who was not available. While waiting for Paul to return, we were
approached by Steve Karp, Environmental Health and Safety Manager for
Interlake. Steve told us he is in char e of the Environmental compliance for
Interlake Inc. We introduced oursel s to Steve and explained the purpose of
our inspection.
We began our inspection at the mair office to verify any changes in the
hazardous waste streams since the last inspection by PHS-EHD. Two major
changes have been implemented in the manufacturing process at Interlake Inc.
1. An alkali, high solid based paint has replaced the lead based paint
applied to the finished racks.
2. The following three waste streams produced in the manufacturing of the
racks have been self certified by Interlake Inc. as non -hazardous
according to Title 22.
a. paint overspray waste
b. roll form coolant waste
c. wash tank waste
The paint and roll form waste is currently being disposed of as a Class 11
industrial waste. The wash tank waste is being discharged to the City of Lodi
sewer under the City of Lodi Waste Water Discharge permit #107.
Mr. Karp began the facility tour at the "roll form" plant. Following the inspection
of the roll form plant, Mr. Karp led Pam Violett and I into the paint application
plant. A new spray booth and a bake oven were being constructed in this
area. Adjacent to the existing spray booth, I observed what Mr. Karp identified
as a MEK distillation unit. Here, I observed a five gallon bucket of what Mr.
Karp identified as MEK sludge overflow waste, without a label and a tight fitting
lid.
0
