A "roll form" coolant is used on the steel coiled strips during the fabrication
process to cool off the metal. The metal strips are then washed with methyl
ethyl ketone (MEK) generating a waste stream of MEK sludge consisting of
heavy metals. The MEK is recycled at the facility minus the sludge which is
hauled as hazardous waste. In 1990, 2.2 tons of MEK sludge was hauled off
site. In the paint booths and paint spray lines, a solid waste is produced from
the • • filters, and paper -• in the painting process. In 1990, 103.5
tons of paint waste was hauled off site. In the maintenance shop, solvents ar
provided and recycled by Safety Kleen. In 1990, 2 tons of solvent waste was
hauled off site. Waste oil is produced from the maintenance of forklifts and
other related vehicles on site. Waste oil sludge is generated from a separatio
chamber in an oil -water separator. The waste oil from the forklifts and vehicle
are stored in an above ground, 500 gallon tank. The waste oil and waste oil
sludge is removed and recycled by Evergreen Environmental. In 1990, 3.6 to
of waste
• was hauled • site.
At the time of inspection the following violations were observed:
Rimill ON -0 - 0
2.
