Safeway takes seriously its <br /> responsibility as a good corporate citizen and strives consistently and proactively to <br /> protect the environment in the communities in which we do business. We understand <br /> that this effort is a partnership and we appreciate this opportunity to respond to your <br /> inquiries. Our response, including detailed information and reference to enclosures, <br /> is set forth below. <br /> May 26,2009 Inspection <br /> The alleged violations are referenced in numerical order and responded to by <br /> number. <br /> 1. Violation No. 4: Corrected on site. <br /> 2. Violation Nos. 6, 9, 50, 51 55, 56: photo chemicals <br /> Safeway does not transport hazardous waste products to the DC. These <br /> products were delivered to the DC by outside carrier to be shipped to the <br /> stores. The products were discontinued and the remaining inventory was <br /> transported from the distribution center via licensed contractor, Shop Hazard <br /> Solutions on 1/31/08. <br /> 3. Violation No. 10: The waste in question was aqueous material from two <br /> scrubber bay sumps. Samples of the liquid were collected by a technician <br /> from GeoAnalytical Laboratories, subcontracted by Safeway's hazardous <br /> waste contractor, Shop Hazards Solutions. The two samples were analyzed <br /> for the 17 metal suite and petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH). Based on the <br /> knowledge of the operations that led to generation of these wastes, these were <br /> the expected characteristics. The metals results are reported in units of <br /> ug/liter. All results are below the STLC criteria.
