Safeway Inc
NorCal Distribution Center
LIQUID PRODUCT DISPOSAL PROCEDURES SUMMARY
1) DO NOT allow any products or materials into storm drains. Assume that any drain outside of
the facility or store is a storm drain, including the receiving pit drain. Storm drains flow
directly to streams, creeks, rivers and bays.
2) DO'NOT dispose of liquids into a dumpster or compactor—the liquid can leak out.and flow to
a storm drain. This includes liquids in containers, such as milk or juice in jugs or cartons. It
also includes frozen products, like ice cream or ice, that could melt into liquid inside the
dumpster or-compactor.
3) .If .you discover a leak, protect nearby storm drains by blocking with absorbent or other
material and notify.your supervisor immediately.
4) Most liquids can be disposed of to a sanitary sewer drain (i.e., sink, utility room drain, inside
floor drain, toilet) inside the facility or store;. however, DO NOT dump the following liquids
down sanitary sewer drains:
■ Unusually large guantities of liquid food products. There is no set limit, but if it is more
than ten (10) gallons of a material, such as milk or juice, contact your local wastewcyter
treatment agency, your Division Environmental Manager, or Corporate Environmental
Affairs before disposal.
■ Liquids that could be toxic. Wash and rinse solutions from the Safeway-authorized
cleaning products program are generally okay to put down sanitary sewer drains. Do not
use unauthorized cleaners. Do not put undiluted, concentrated cleaners or floor
chemicals, undiluted bleaches, or pesticides down the drain.
■ Fats, oils or greases. Fats, oils and greases should .be disposed of into the designated
containers that are serviced by a renderer or recycler.
If you have any questions regarding the disposal of anything, contact your Manager/Supervisor,
Division Safety and Environmental Manager or Corporate Environmental Affairs for guidance.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I have read and understand the Liquid :Product Disposal Procedures Summary above, which
describes proper procedures for handling disposal of liquids at the warehouse and store. I also
understand that violation of these procedures can be cause for disciplinary action up to and
'including termination.
Employee Name (print) Employee Name (sign)
Date :Dept.
1
