11 <br />WM� 04 tin 9A <br />General — The safety of Safeway employees is of the utmost importance. Under no circumstances should the <br />safety of personnel be placed in jeopardy. If at any of the steps below, you feel that the task exceeds your <br />training, equipment, physical ability, or Safeway's policies,and procedures - - stop, re -assess, and call for <br />additional assistance. <br />Small spills - Chemicals will be picked up with absorbent materials by our maintenance, supervisors and/or <br />and sanitation employees using the proper personal protective clothing and safety equipment. Waste will be <br />placed in a labeled waste drum and properly disposed of. <br />Lame spills - If necessary, contact the fire department. Contact an approved remediation contractor to clean up <br />the spill. Maintenance, supervisors and/or sanitation employees, using the proper personal protective clothing <br />and safety equipment, will help to prevent the spill from reaching storm water drainages (drains, catch basins, <br />gutters, ditches, etc.), where it can be done safely. <br />The following clean-up companies will be used in the event that our company must expend funds to clean up a <br />hazardous materials chemical spill: <br />1. NRC 1-510-749-1390 <br />Company Name 24-hour telephone # Agreement/Contract # <br />Spills of liquid materials: <br />Use the following steps only if safe to do so and using proper personal protective equipment <br />1. Isolate area and make notifications <br />2. Remove sources of ignition (if flammable material is involved or suspected) <br />3. Shut down the system involved <br />4. Position container(s) so as to stop further leakage <br />5. If necessary, plug drains with drain blocker mat <br />6. If necessary, build retention dike using absorbent boom <br />7. Reduce pressure in container/system (if applicable) <br />8. Apply absorbent materials (pigs, pillows, powder, cat litter) to spill area <br />9. Plug and patch container(s) leaking <br />10. Secure system valves and closures <br />11. Neutralize spilled material (if applicable) <br />12. Place used absorbent into labeled waste drum <br />
