20 August 1998
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0483
3.0. SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of work will initially include the advancement and sampling of one soil probe boring. The
probe boring will be advanced to a depth of 30 feet below surface grade (bsg). However, if field
screening of soil samples indicate that hydrocarbon impaction is present at 30 feet bsg,the probe
boring will be advanced to greater depths. Furthermore, if contamination at the site appears to be
extensive, at least three additional soil probe borings will be advanced and additional soil and/or
ground water samples collected.
Selected soil and/or ground water samples will be transmitted to a state-certified laboratory for the
following analysis:
1. Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as diesel and motor oil, in accordance with EPA
method 8015/5030;
2. Volatile aromatics (BTEX) in accordance with,EPA method 8020/602.
4.0. PROCEDURES
-4.1. PROBING AND SAMPLING
Soil probe borings will be advanced using a Geoprobe 5400 soil probing unit equipped with 1.125
inch diameter probe rods and an attached 2.15-inch diameter soil sampler. Probe borings will be
advanced near the former UST area. Proposed soil probe boring locations are illustrated on Figure
2.
Discrete soil samples will be collected at five-foot intervals beginning at a depth of 5 feet bsg using
a Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with four pre-cleaned 1.125-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves.
Soil samples will be preserved by covering both ends of the second brass sleeve with Teflon sheets,
capping and sealing with tape. Each sample sleeve will be labeled with the following information:
soil probe boring location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials.
Initially, soil samples will be collected to a depth of 30 feet bsg. If petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted
soil is encountered during probing activities, probe borings may be advanced to greater depths or
additional probe borings will be advanced in an attempt to determine the extent impacted soil.
If ground water is encountered, grab water samples will be collected from selected probe borings
using a Geoprobe water sampling assembly. For the sampling assembly, probe rods will be fitted
with a retractable ground water screen and advanced to the total depth of each probe boring;the rods
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
