PHS/EHD has the following comments for your consideration.
The work plan proposed to drill and sample four soil borings to investigate petroleum hydrocarbon
contamination documented at the time of the underground storage tank (UST) removals, June 15, 1987.
Two soil borings will be drilled in the area of former UST #1 and #2 and two in the area of former UST
#3 and #4. Soil samples will be collected at five foot intervals to a total depth of 25 feet below grade. A
minimum of two soil samples from each borings will be submitted for laboratory analysis. Since
groundwater is expected to be encountered a groundwater sample will be collected for analysis from each
soil boring. If field conditions warrant, one or more soil borings will be converted into monitoring wells.
Grouting of the boreholes should be accomplished using a cement/bentonite slurry.
Since soil contamination was evidenced at 21 feet below grade and groundwater in this area is at 25 feet
below grade a groundwater investigation is warranted. PHS/EHD recommends three monitoring wells be
installed at this time.
Please submit a drilling permit application and $89. for the soil investigation. Field work may commence
upon issuance of a drilling permit. Please provide PHS/EHD 48 hours notice prior to commencing field
work so that the sampling and grouting can be witnessed.
If you have any questions, please contact Mary Meays at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Diane M.
