(AGE) on your behalf for the above-referenced site. The work
plan was submitted in response to the EHD letter dated June 20, 2008, directing an
assessment of the potential hazard for vapor intrusion into the existing onsite buildings.
In the work plan, AGE proposes to advance three soil probe borings to total depths of
approximately four feet below ground surface (bgs) using a Geoprobe 5400 direct-push
probing unit at locations illustrated in Figure 2. Soil gas samples will be collected on solid
adsorbent TO-17 tubes for analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) quantified as
diesel (TPH-d), and in Tedlar bags for analysis of TPH quantified as gasoline (TPH-g);
benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and total xylenes (BTEX); methyl tertiary-butyl ether
(MTBE), tertiary-amyl methyl ether(TAME), di-isopropyl ether(DIPE), ethyl tertiary-butyl
ether (ETBE), tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA), 1,2-dibromoethane (EDB), and 1,2-
dichoroethane (1,2-DCA). AGE proposes to check for leak detection by placing a plastic
sheet over the sampling equipment and exposing the ambient air to isopropyl alcohol. The
EHD approves the work plan with minor revisions noted below.
Soil gas samples will be collected at five feet bgs or deeper, instead of the proposed four
feet bgs, at least thirty minutes following the probe installation. Based on the document
titled Advisory Active Soil Gas Investigation dated January 28, 2003, issued jointly by the
Department of Toxic Control (DTSC) and the California Regional Water Quality Control
Board — Los Angeles Region (LARWQCB), Section 2.2.3 states that "soil gas probes
should be installed at a minimum of one sample depth, generally at five feet bgs" and
Section 2.2.1 states that "if the bottom five feet of a continuously cored boring is composed
