08 September 1997
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0137
2.3. ASSESSMENT OF HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL AND GROUND WATER
In April 1994, three ground water monitoring wells and five soil borings were drilled and installed
at the site by Geological Audit Services, Inc. (GAS). Hydrocarbon-impacted soil and ground water
were detected in soil and ground water samples collected during the investigation.
On 14 August 1995, five additional soil borings were drilled at the site under the direction of AGE.
Two of the borings were completed as ground water monitoring wells. Petroleum hydrocarbons were
detected in soil samples collected during the investigation at concentrations as high as 1,900
milligrams per kilogram: rng/Kg (parts per million: ppm); hydrocarbons were detected in ground
water samples at concentrations as high as 450,000 micrograms per liter: pgIL (parts per billion:
ppb).
On 30 October 1996, four soil probe borings were advanced in accordance with the RFS
investigation. Three of these probe borings were advanced north of the RFS site on the]imco Truck
Stop property.Petroleurn hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline were detected in soil samples collected
during the investigation at concentrations up to 240 ppm and hydrocarbons were detected in ground
water samples collected from the .limco site. The PHS-EHD has requested the installation of
monitoring wells and soil/ground water remediation feasibility wells at the site.
3.0. SCOPE OF WORK
3.1. DRILLING AND SAMPLING
The proposed scope of work includes the drilling and installation of two SVEIIAS wells and three
ground water monitoring wells. Monitoring wells will be installed on the Jimco Truck Stop site;
SVEIIAS wells will be installed east of the former UST location on the RFS property.
Soil borings will be advanced using a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with hollow-stem augers.
Borings established for ground water monitoring wells will utilize 8.25-inch augers; soil borings
established for remediation wells will utilize 10-inch augers. Proposed monitoring well and
SVE/IAS locations are illustrated in Figure 2. Proposed monitoring well design is illustrated in
Figure 3 - Monitoring Well Design; proposed SVEIIAS well design is illustrated in Figure 4 -
SVE/IAS Well Design.
Soil samples will be collected at five-foot intervals beginning at 5 feet bsg in each boring. Samples
will be collected using a California split-spoon sampler and brass sleeves. The sampler will be driven
by dropping a 140-pound weight from a height of 30 inches. The number of blows required to drive
each 6-inch length of the sampler (blow counts) are to be recorded on the boring Iogs by an AGE
Advanced GeoEnvironmento,Inc.
