PUBLIC HtALTH SERVI(ES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY 2 ``
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer . The representatives of
the above referenced site were you, and PHS/EHD representatives were Margaret
Lagorio and Jeffrey Wong. Consultant representative was John Lane of Ground Zero
Analysis, Inc. The following is a summary of the discussions and comments by
PHS/EHD.
• The supply well on site is located approximately 40 feet from the former
underground storage tanks (UST). The water has tested positive for coliform on
several occasions in the past. You stated at the meeting that the supply well on site
is no longer used as a source of potable water. A water sample was analyzed for
hydrocarbon in July 1997 using Method SM5520F and a detection limit 2 parts per
million (ppm). A detection limit of 50 parts per billion (ppb) should be used to
determine the presence of hydrocarbon and EPA Method 8015 Modified should be
used for analysis. It is unknown whether the well has been impacted by the
petroleum contaminatiorL Construction details of the well are not known.
PHS/EHD recommends video-ta in the well so its condition and construction
can be evaluated. A water sample should be collected withbai r or laboratory
analyses. The video camera should have centralizers and be c-ap—a-fiTe of capturing
side and bottom color visions of the well.
• A water sample should be collected directly from the well not from a faucet This
This
will control loss of volatiles from the sample. This can be done when chi- I is
video taped. In addition to testing for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline
(TPH-g), and aromatic hydrocarbons as Benzene, Ethylbenzene, Toluene, and
Xylenes (BTEX), oxygenates must be tested for using EPA Metho '826a
A Division of San Joaquin Countv Health Care Services
