Mr.James L.L. Barton
February 18,2004
RECOMMENDED ACTIONS AND TREATMENT SYSTEM MONITORING PROGRAM
Ground Zero recommends the following modifications to the groundwater treatment system:
1. Install low-profile, multiple tray, air stripper, influent sump, and appurtenances in series lead treatment
prior to the GAC units;
2. Remove the 4,800-gallon temporary storage tank and allow direct discharge to the ground surface
pursuant to the existing WDRs;
3. Install additional groundwater extraction wells as necessary to increase the flow through the system.
Based upon the expected increase in carbon efficiency Ground Zero proposes modify the monitoring
program as follows:
Influent Monitoring
Constituent Fre uene Rationale
TPH Gasoline Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
BTEX Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
MTBE, TBA, DIPE, ETBE, Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
TAME
Ethanol, Methanol Annually Has never been detected in any treatment system sample
or from any monitoring well.
1,2-DCA, EDB Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
Na thalene Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
PAHs Annually Although detection limits are elevated, no carcinogenic
PAHs have been detected in any influent sample. In
addition, no carcinogenic PAHs have been detected in
any effluent or GAC sample.
Effluent Monitoring
Constituent Frequency Rationale
Flow Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
Specific Conductivity Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
H Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
Total Dissolved Solids Annually Specific Conductivity is a measure of dissolved solids in
groundwater and TDS levels have remained low and
stable in all treatments stem samples
TPH Gasoline Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
BTEX Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
MTBE, TBA, DIPE, ETBE, Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
TAME
Ethanol, Methanol Annually Has never been detected in any treatment system sample
or from any monitorin well.
1,2-DCA, EDB Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
Na thalene Monthly Standard frequency for Order No. R5-2003-0044
PAHs Annually No carcinogenic PAHs have been detected in any
treatments stem sample.
Chloride, sulfates, nitrates Eliminate Treatment system samples collected to date have
remained low and stable and these constituents are not
G:IGROUNDZE1TULEBURG\Reportslbarton_sysmod2.doe
