The <br /> following is aep neral guide covering discovery and assessment, reporting to <br /> appropriate authorities, and follow-up procedures. <br /> Any employee who discovers a spill at this complex shall always observe safety <br /> procedures and practice common sense. The employee shall be considered the "first <br /> employee on the scene." <br /> No-Smoking/No Fires <br /> 1 . If this spill is known to be non-hazardous, the employee shall assess and write down <br /> the following: <br /> • The location of the spill. <br /> • If any of the spilled substance appears to have entered or threatened any body of <br /> water. <br /> • The type of substance and estimated volume, if possible. <br /> • If there is a potential for additional spillage. <br /> • Whether or not any soil has been affected. <br /> 2. If a release is detected, try to determine the source of the said release. If the worst <br /> of the discharge is obvious, attempt to shut off or minimize the discharge as follows: <br /> A. Shut off electric power to pumps and other electrical equipment in the spill area. <br /> B. Close shutoff valves. <br /> C. Spills greater than 42 gal. must be reported within 24 hours. <br /> D. Cover storm drains in the area with impermeable covers. <br /> E. Take all necessary and reasonable steps to prevent the spill from reaching water. <br /> 3. If a fire is present and limited, use a portable fire extinguisher to control fire. <br /> Contact Fire Department. <br /> 4. Notify the Facility Response Coordinator. <br /> For Small Spills (under 42 gal.) <br /> 5. Control the spill using absorbent powder and portable pumps, or any other <br /> appropriate equipment in the spill cleanup kit, located in Maintenance building, to <br /> whatever degree necessary. <br /> 6. Cleanup spill using other absorbent materials, i.e. absorbent powders, absorbent <br /> mats, in the spill cleanup kit. <br /> 7. Collect all used absorbents and recovered liquid in the spill cleanup kit drum. <br /> Contact appropriate waste hauler for disposal of the drum in accordance with Federal, <br /> State, and local regulations. <br /> FOR LARGER SPILLS <br /> 8. The facility response coordinator shall: <br /> A. Determine the character, source, and amount of this spill. <br /> 60 <br />
