The Sierra Nevada is
M composed of igneous and metamorphic rocks of
pre-Tertiery age which comprise the
' basement complex beneath the valley. The Coast Ranges contain folded and faulted
sedimentary rocks of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age, which are similar to those rocks
that underlie the Valley at depth, and nonconformably overlie the basement
complex.
Basement rocks in the Valley are overlain by Cretaceous and early Tertiary
aged marine sedimentary rocks. The marine sediments attain thicknesses in excess
Of 15,000 feet (Page, 1986) . Ground water associated with the marine sediments is
_ ... ...
considered brackish; and is not
generally associated with significant. ground
water production.
DANiEs & ATOORE
