6
4
Physical Hazards
i Accidents involving physical hazards can directly injure field personnel and -can.create
additional hazards such as increased exposure to chemicals due to damaged protective equipment.
Working around heavy equipment such as drilling rigs presents the potential .for becoming
j physically entangled in the equipment or being run over. Field personnel will maintain eye or voice
contact with the equipment operator whenever it is necessary to move within the equipment's path
of operation, including movement on the ground. Field personnel should maintain awareness for
potential safety hazards, and should immediately inform the SSO of any new hazards so that
corrective measures can be taken.
Noise
Noise is a potential hazard in areas where heavy equipment.including drilling rigs,-power
tools, pumps or generators are operated. Heavy equipment operation may produce noise levels that
11 reach or exceed 85 decibels (dBA), the action level established by OSHA. Elevated noise levels
will be evaluated by the SSO when equipment is operated.. Exposure to elevated noise levels can
lead to temporary or permanent hearing loss, and can also cause muscle tension and irritability.
The SSO will ensure hearing protection is utilized when noise levels are elevated.
Utility Lines
The Underground Service Alert (USA) will be contacted a minimum of 48 hours before
field activities begin. USA will notify private utility companies about their responsibility to locate
s
Ll and mark all buried utility lines. USA can be reached through an 800 number which is listed in the
white pages for the local area (1-800-227-2600). All field vehicles and heavy equipment will be
i L maintained at a minimum distance of 10 feet, in all vertical and horizontal directions from all
electrical power lines (energized lines) and/or electrical equipment with a voltage less than or equal
to 50 kilovolts (kv). If the voltage exceeds 50 kv, the clearance shall be increased by 4 inches for
eve v over that voltage.
every 10 khle.g
i
Sunburn
Working outdoors on sunny days for extended periods of time can cause sunburn to the
i skin. Excessive exposure to sunlight is associated with the development of skin cancer. Field staff
should take precautions to prevent sunburn by using sun-screen lotion and/or wearing hats and
long-sleeved garments.
Rt
E.162711SSHP.DOC
's
