5.0 FIELD PROCEDURES
All field procedures will be supervised by a state of California Certified Engineering Geologist.
Procedures for the advancement of soil borings, soil sampling, equipment decontamination,
sample shipment, and boring abandonment are outlined below.
5.1 Boring Advancement
Prior to conducting any intrusive methods at the site, Underground Service Alert of Northern
California will be utilized to map out the underground structures. Based on the clearances
obtained, Consultant will site the soil borings in a safe locations.
Soil sampling locations related to the distribution box, 90 degree joint and end of each leach line
will be exposed. Leach line sampling locations will use the beginning and end of each line as a
guide and the borings will be advanced at an angle to reach the required sampling area below the
leach line trench. Once sample areas have been inspected and approved by SJCEHD to satisfy the
regulatory requirements the probe borings will be advanced. Geoprobe borings will be advanced
using a van-mounted Geoprobe 5400 direct-push probing unit equipped with 1.25-inch probing
rods operated by V&W Drilling. The Geoprobe advances soil probe borings using a hydraulic
hammer to drive soil sampling tools to specified depths. The boring to be drilled under the septic
tank will be an angle boring and will likely have a vertical deviation of about 30 degrees. Hand
Augur borings will be advanced using a 2" diameter AMS hand augur and soil sampling device.
that will collect soil samples into 2" x 6" brass sleeves.
5.2 Soil Sampling Procedures
Soil borings to be sampled at specified depths using a 1.25" Geoprobe soil sampling assembly
loaded with four six-inch brass sleeves. Upon sample retrieval, the ends of the second sleeve will
be covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. In the field, a California certified
engineering geologist will log all soil samples for hydro geologic and lithologic characteristics
according to the Unified Soil Classification System(USCS) and screen each sample for any
organic vapors using a photoionization detector(PID) calibrated to 100 ppmv isobutylene, and
observations will be made for the visual identification of any soil staining or discoloration.
Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in a chilled container under ice and
transported under chain-of-custody procedure to a DHS-certified laboratory. Each sample sleeve
will be labeled with the boring designation, time, date and sampler's initials.
Hand Augur borings will be advanced using a 2" diameter AMS hand augur and soil sampling
device. that will collect soil samples into 2" x 6" brass sleeves.
5.3 Equipment Decontamination
Prior to use, all sampling tools used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean
water after being washed with a solution of Alconox and water.
Main\D\Environmental\St.FrancisMotel\Workplan051005.vipd 9
