The "job shop" is located near the aluminum shop in the
central north area of the facility. Custom parts are
manufactured, repaired, cleaned, and prepared for plating.
The "job hop" is a metal shop with lathes, drill presses, and
all the necessary machinery required for metal working and
parts manufacturing.
VI. HAZARDOM WASTE ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
The plating operation generates the majority of the manifested
hazardous ) waste at this facility. To a lesser extent,
hazardous waste is generated by grinding and sanding metal
bumpers and parts; painting urethane bumpers; vehicle and
machine maintenance; and facility maintenance, upgrade, and
repair.
The plati g operation generates a liquid waste stream which
flows to n on site pretreatment system. The waste consists of
rinse wat r, drag out, and cleaners. The waste streams are
individua ly piped from the production departments directly to
the pretr atment area. Two of the three waste streams, cyanide
and chromium drag out, are piped through a separate four inch
line into a cyanide sump and a chromium acid sump. The
cleaners nd the heavy metals, copper and nickel, are piped
through a six inch line into a heavy metal sump. This is the
beginning of the pretreatment process. The wastes are recycled
into usab e products or converted to a sludge which is pressed
to form a ilter cake. The waste water is treated and disposed
of to th sanitary sewer system and the filter cake is
manifested off site as hazardous waste to Encycle/Texas Inc. ,
5500 Up River Road, Corpus Christy, Tx 78407 . The waste is
transported by Greatwestern Chemical, CAD 981382443 . In 1992 ,
38 tons of filter cake was manifested for recycling.
The grinding and sanding of metal coated bumpers and other
parts generates a metal contaminated dust or sandy waste.
These waste streams were characterized as hazardous waste by
An Lab, 1910 S Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 (report date - May
10, 1993) ,IPrior test results, prepared by Canonie Lab. , were
submitted lby Robert Huntley on June 8, 1993 . These results
also indicate that a sample obtained from the "Job Production"
line on January 28, 1991 is above the Total Threshold Limit
Concentra ion (TT C) for copper and zinc. Levels are reported
at 7860 an 9490 mg/kg respectively. The TTLC values set in 22
CCR, Chapt r 11, Article 3 , Section 66261. 24 (a) (2) (A) Table
II are 2 , 00 mg/kg for copper and 5, 000 mg/kg for zinc.
In addition to the Canonie Lab. and An Lab results, Roy F.
Weston Lab prepared a report dated July 13 , 1992 which
indicates zinc at 3100 mg/kg. This sample was obtained from
the "Job Production" polishing area and analyzed using the
Waste Extraction Test (W.E.T. ) . Constituent levels above the
3
